William Struijk has worked at Farm Trans since 2015. He started as a driver for refrigerated and frozen transport and after a year, he switched to bulk transport. “Back then, I primarily worked with the potato trailer, but for 2 years now, I have mostly been driving walking floor trailers.”

With hopper trailers, but most often with walking floor trailers, William transports all kinds of products. “I actually transport all kinds of smallholder farm products to and from the food processing industry. But also livestock feed, for example.”

What is being transported depends on the season. William explains: “At the end of April, for example, we start transporting the first spinach crop. After that, it is mostly onions, carrots, potatoes and green beans. But we also, for example, transport compost for the mushroom growers all year long, as well as potato scraps from the chip factory to the pig farmers. So, what we do is very broad and diverse.”

William enjoys the friendly atmosphere at Farm Trans and the companies he visits. “At most of the companies, there is always a cup of coffee ready for you and a ‘good morning’. I like that the work here involves more than just driving: you also help out at the locations so you are a part of the entire process.”

The work has taken William to all kinds of places. “Two years ago, I had to deliver a load of compost deep into East Germany, near Magdeburg. I was really way out in the woods there, parked in the middle of nowhere. That night, I enjoyed a nice meal outdoors. In the morning, I woke up and pulled open the curtains to see a whole herd of deer around the vehicle. Yes, that was certainly a rare, beautiful moment. Where else would you ever see something like that?”
