“Actually, I have always wanted to be a lorry driver; that was my dream.”
Fenne van Gorp (21) is one of our recent additions. As a driver, she criss-crosses the country with great pleasure: “I always wanted to become a lorry driver. My mother told me that when I talked about lorries, I always had a sparkle in my eyes. And she says I still have it now.” Fenne obtained her HGV license in just one month by way of special training programme.
Both Fenne's father and brother drove for Farm Trans; her brother was even the one who recommended Farm Trans. “Actually, I have always wanted to be a lorry driver; that was my dream.” Fenne first tried another study programme, but it was not for her: “I am more suited for practical, hands-on learning instead of sitting still and studying.” Ultimately, she started working instead, but she still wanted to obtain her driver's license.
After a good discussion with Farm Trans, it quickly became clear that Fenne would start pursuing her dream. “I took care of the theoretical part of the driver's license myself by signing up for a course in the daytime.” Fenne did not want sit still in the meantime and she started working as a Shunter at the Farm Trans location in Lommel. “Before I started working in Lommel, I received notice that I could begin with the driving lessons. After 4.5 days of practical lessons, I was ready for my exam and earned my category C license. One week later, I immediately received notice that I could continue with the driving lessons for a CE license.” The whole process just flew by.
The next step was choosing the type of trailer. “To make choosing easier, I accompanied different colleagues for a whole week in order to get to know all the different types of trailers. It was kind of like love at first sight with the belt discharger and potatoes. I never really expected that, but I really like it!”
Now that she is finally driving, Fenne couldn't be more delighted. “I really enjoy being on the road. That I can do my own thing, you can see everything and you get to know so many new people. Just the whole driving world really appeals to me. It was already familiar to me and sometimes feels a little like coming home. When I see the older generation, they often call me the daughter or sister of.
The lessons may be over, but Fenne is still learning new things everyday: other roads, new corners and techniques. Fenne recommends this special training programme to everyone and especially invites women to go for their HGV license. “You can quickly find your way in this world and you must never give up. I had some setbacks, too. But you must keep going, because you will ultimately get what you have always you longed for. And I think there should be more women on the road: we need to support each other!”
